The HANAC Corona Senior Residence provides 67 units of affordable housing to seniors aged 62 and older earning 40-60% of the area median income (AMI), including 21 apartments set aside for the formerly homeless. The HANAC Corona Senior Residence is one of the largest low-income senior housing developments in the nation to be Passive House certified. Passive House buildings use up to 90% less energy that traditional construction, which increases affordability for tenants and management. The project also meets NYSERDA Multifamily Performance Program and Enterprise Green Communities Standards for environmental sustainability.The HANAC Corona Senior Residence is pursuing Passive House certification (one of the most rigorous standards for energy efficiency in building) from the Passive House Institute in Germany. The central principle of Passive House design is to create buildings which require as little energy as possible for heating and cooling, while maintaining a healthy and comfortable indoor environment. This is achieved through an airtight building envelope (requiring proper insulation on the roof, foundation and all sides of the building), highly insulated doors and windows, and efficient heating, cooling and ventilation systems. Passive House designed buildings typically require 75-90% less energy to heat and cool than typical construction methods.
